Kids' Book Reviews By Kids: How to Write a Children's Book Review You Think Other Kids Will Like

You probably have to write book reviews in school. When I was a kid, I used to hate to write them. But now I use book reviews that other people have written all the time. They help me to decide which books I want to read next. So if you're a kid and you have to write a book review, here is how to write one about a book you think other kids will like.

Actually, it doesn't have to be about a book you really like. Negative reviews are helpful too. Sometimes a book you don't like is still a great book, just not for you. Another kid with other interests might find that book perfect for them. So write your book review anyway.

Here are some things you must include in your book review:

Title

Be sure to get the correct and complete title for the book you are reviewing. Sometimes series of books have parts of the titles that are the same, and parts that are different. If you don't include the whole title, another kid might read your review and get the wrong book to read.

For example, you probably know about Diary of a Wimpy Kid, by Jeff Kinney. But if you are reviewing one of the later books in the series, you must be sure to include the whole title, like this: Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Ugly Truth (Book 5.)

Author

You probably hate it when people say or spell your name wrong. I bet the authors of the books you are reading feel exactly the same way!

Be sure to spell the author's name correctly. Check and double check it in your report.

Recommended ages or grades

You might read a funny book but know it is too hard for your younger sister to read. So include the ages you think would be able to enjoy the book.

You can say something like, "Recommended for 4th and 5th graders." Or something like, "I'm 10, but I usually read books that are much harder than what we are supposed to be reading in school. So I think this would be better for sixth or seventh graders."

Summary of the story

Give a brief description of the main things that happen in the beginning of the story, or the beginning and middle. But be sure not to give away the ending, especially if there is something really surprising that happens.

Here are other things you might want to include in your book review:

Something you really enjoyed

If you thought the book was funny, say so. If you thought it was exciting or scary, and you love adventure, mention that.

Something you didn't like about the book

Maybe the beginning is really good, but the ending is boring. Perhaps the book seemed too scary for kids, or it gave you nightmares. You can warn others about that.

Other similar books

Compare the book you are reviewing to other similar books. That way, kids can get a better idea if it might be something they would like to read.

Others who might enjoy the book

Say what kind of kids you think might like the book. For example, "If you love to read books about spies or adventure, you will enjoy the Alex Rider book series." Or, "If you like books about witches that are not too scary, you might enjoy "Which Witch?" by Eva Ibbotson.

Recommend other books or authors

It's a lot of fun to find a whole bunch of books by another author that you didn't even know about. So you can mention other authors with books like the one you are reviewing. Or you can suggest other books that are similar to this one, that other kids might also enjoy reading.

Think about the kids who will be reading your book review. Use some of these tips I've given you when you write. If you do, you will be able to write kids' book reviews and help other children by sharing your love of reading and great books.

Heroes have often been born from unlikely mold. From four ordinary children entering a wardrobe, two hobbits carrying an object of great evil, to the emerging of a certain orphan with a scar -these literary figures have proved one thing. Heroes are made not born.

It is then the task given, destined to you that ultimately changes you. Great tasks beget great heroes. It is this very essence that allows a person to strive to become more than what he already is, to go beyond his boundaries. Joseph Campbell said that a hero is someone who has done something beyond the normal range of achievement. And what greater achievement to create a heroic figure than that of saving a world? This is The Quest few have been chosen to embark on. And one of them is Ethan Feld.

Ethan was one of those boys who calls himself a failure at the baseball plate. But when his father is abducted and the Four Worlds are threatened by an ancient cunning figure, he is called upon to stop the end of the world. And he does this by playing baseball.

No doubt, Summerland would have fit right into the typical recipe of an archetypal quest -get the chosen one, chosen one gathers band of companions, chosen one and crew encounter the bad guy, defeat him and save the world. If not for this significant element -baseball. Ethan and his group (ranging from a tiny giant to an even tinier Indian) slug through the Worlds, overcoming obstacles with their bats and mitts.

Yet Summerland is more than just a fantasy tale about this game. It is a big Tree of stories whose multitude of branches embrace the myths of all ages. Summerland is sprinkled with mythical allusions and archetypes who soon evolved into characters each memorable and unique in their own way. Chabon has created a rich tapestry of mythology that stands on its own. By the end of the story as Ethan and his motley crew struggle to save the Big Tree of Life, they realized they gained something equally precious along the way -that of finding true strength within themselves.

Well, here comes the first creative presentation idea:

Creative Presentation Idea #1:

Description: Do not use titles in your slides

What for?

Tell the viewers that you left out the presentation titles intentionally in order to see if you could deliver your main points clearly When using the presentation as a learning aid in a workshop, if your audience is required to complete the titles, they will have to think about what you are teaching and actively participate in the discussion
Variations:

Leave the titles out for only some of the slides - perhaps the ones that will be used for a review of the presentation so far, or to trigger a discussion on a controversial issue Write only half of the title, and ask your audience to complete it
Comments:

You can use a printed "complete" version of the presentation for yourself, so you can see the titles you meant to use

The creative ideas I suggest are of different kinds and levels. Some are crazier than others. You should choose the one that best suits your presentation needs. Do you want to make a really bold statement? Here is a more outrageous idea:

Creative Presentation Idea #75:

Description: Present the presentation blindfolded!

What for?

You could definitely demonstrate your knowledge of the subject and a good memory skill as well as self-confidence by using this idea Use it to add some humor to your presentation: after you put the blindfold on, intentionally make some funny mistakes when referring to the slides, and only then show them that you know what you're talking about...
Variations:

Put the blindfold on for just a short part of the presentation, when you want to make a dramatic effect Provide blindfolds for the participants, so their sense of hearing will be heightened and you could test their memory after a few slides!
Comments:

Take care not to offend people with disabilities (e.g. blind people, etc.). Use this technique when you are certain you can do so tactfully and with good taste

As you might have noticed by now, these creative presentation ideas do not rely on an incredible knowledge of Power Point, or on unreasonable production expenses. Actually, in some of the ideas you don't even have to use Power Point at all!. Here's one:

Creative Presentation Idea #31:

Description: Have a painter/caricaturist assistant -
drawing images/cartoons on a flip chart as you explain

What for?

This would make your presentation "live" on the go. Instead of using slides, the sketches would visually convey the major points you are trying to get through. For example - when you talk about the tough task lying ahead, a simple drawing of mountaineers climbing up a steep mountain would etch that image in the viewers mind. A caricaturist could add a touch of humor to your presentation with funny images and hints
Variations:

If you have the talent - you could draw the sketches yourself as you speak. If there's an electronic drawing pad - you could use it and show the drawings on a screen as they are drawn. Alternatively - ask some of the participants themselves to help you and draw those images on the flip chart as you speak. You could prepare and give the participants a comic book with the important things you talked about.
Comments:

Make sure there are enough flip chart pages you could use, and that everyone can see them well. Rehearse the presentation with the painter and the list the major subjects you are going to talk about so that s/he would have time to think about how to make meaningful and relevant drawings. Here are a few pointers on where to find the person to draw for you: look for high school or college art students who wish to practice and demonstrate their talent for a small fee or free of charge; ask around for other employees that have that talent and are willing to give a hand. Of course, if the presentation is worth the investment, you may always hire a professional caricaturist.

Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle" Book Review

Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle" is an incredible book that is well known for its condemnation of the unsanitary conditions of meat packing plants, but many people today don't know that this book had a much wider, immense scope, and ambition. He also dealt with issues of racism, immigration, poverty, capitalism run rampant, and social injustice.

It's not out of line to say that Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle" is arguably one of the best American books of the 20th century. This book is written like fiction while displaying the actual real conditions of America for immigrant Jurgis Rudkus, who comes looking for the American Dream in the early 20th century and finds nothing but pain, heartache, and terrible conditions for everyone in oppressive poverty.

Childrens Books

Upton Sinclair shows that even as the immigrants struggle to survive, that they come to realize that it's a hopeless battle. They work in the packinghouses which take advantage of their slave-like labor while bringing poverty, disease, death, injury, injustice, rape, jail and hopelessness. With no other options and a thousand men clamoring at the gate for their job, they are held in their position with no chance at improvement or escape.

Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle" Book Review

Upton Sinclair uses the story of Jurgis to show the first hand experiences of a system where capitalism runs amuck without any checks or balances. In the drive for even a half-penny extra of profit, spoiled meat is bribed past inspectors, men are crushed and killed, waste is driven wholesale into public drinking water and people are made sick by the tens of thousands so a few very rich guys at the top can get a little richer.

This is an amazing book, though its main weaknesses are the same that are brought up with the majority of Upton Sinclair novels. One is that the opening is slow. It takes a long time in the early chapters to introduce all the characters, and the other is that the ending reads like propaganda. Upton Sinclair believed that all literature was propaganda, so this isn't surprising.

These are minor weaknesses to an overall amazing book that was one of the most influential in American history. Many believe that only Harriet Beecher Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin" had more of an influence on the United States than Upton Sinclair.

"The Jungle" is the perfect example of a lost art: an amazing fictional story illustrating a point far more greatly than non-fiction could hope to. Most fiction nowadays trying to do the same comes across as preachy, and doesn't spend enough time on the story. Upton Sinclair's novel is amazing, and should continue to be read today as a reminder of what literature can do to help society, and to not forget about how bad things used to be.

Party Ideas For Kids - Fun Finger Food

If you are planning a birthday party for your child, one of the most important considerations should be the food you plan on serving. After all what kid doesn't love to eat?

Finger foods are a great menu choice for kids of all ages. Many of the choices are quite low on the "messy scale," easy to make and just plain fun to eat! (Yes, even when you are preparing them.)You don't need a plate, fork, or spoon.

Childrens Books

You are really only limited by your creativity and your budget. Finger foods work best when they are 100% edible that means nothing to pick out or cut off. They include things like cheese and crackers, fruit and a variety of little sandwiches, just to name a few.

Party Ideas For Kids - Fun Finger Food

Cut the crusts off of white bread and spread with cream cheese and jelly. A combination of cream cheese and a thin slice of cucumber works well too. Cut in quarters.

Cut a small dinner roll in half. Remove some of the bread to make a hollow. Stuff the hollow with chicken, ham or tuna salad. Serve as a topless sandwich with the fillings showing.

Hollow out cherry tomatoes, salt lightly and place upside down on a paper towel to drain for a few minutes. Stuff with cottage cheese mixed with ranch dip.

Deviled eggs are easy and quick and most children like them.

Stuff celery stalks with peanut butter and raisins, spreadable cheese, or cream cheese then cut into bite size chunks.

Baby vegetables intrigue children. Serve baby patty pan squash, zucchini, string beans, and carrots with or without a dip. If you decide on a dip make it with cottage cheese whirled in a blender till smooth, that's a healthier choice than sour cream or mayonnaise.

Spread small tortillas with refried beans, grated cheese and a bit of mild salsa. Fold as for a burrito, tucking the ends in, then cut in half. These can be served at room temperature.

Crackers are available in almost every shape and flavor imaginable. Graham crackers are even fair game, in this case. Younger kids will appreciate those that are animal shaped, such as Teddy Grahams.

Pineapple chunks, apple slices, grapes or raisins, strawberries, banana chunks and peach slices all make great finger foods. Whether you serve them with or without some type of fruit dip, kids will love them.

Buy miniature hot dogs and serve with dips of ketchup, bbq sauce, and a mild honey mustard sauce. French fries are delicious with these sauces as well. Children love chicken wing drummets. Buy them prepared or make them yourself. If you buy them get the plain ones.

Keep portions tiny so little fingers can handle these fun finger food ideas.
